What Is Socially Acceptable

alcohol-friendly society

Once, my friend told me that drinking is socially acceptable in Korea, which I found interesting. While I agreed somehow, I also wondered what exactly this meant. He explained that there are many accessible restaurants and bars throughout the country, they often stay open late, and it's easy and natural to call someone to meet up for a drink. It's also common to have a meal together while drinking, and this isn't seen as weird or awkward. Additionally, drinking is sometimes necessary for business purposes, and it's common to have team dinners that involve drinking. Although I might not have captured his exact wording, he mentioned these points to help me understand the cultural context, and I know he meant no offense. On that day, we had a barbecue without any alcohol.

Another friend of mine, who is Korean and has an American acquaintance, once shared a conversation they had about drinking. My friend mentioned that he enjoys drinking once or twice a week, and the acquaintance responded by suggesting that maybe he needs to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). My friend was shocked to consider the possibility that he might be an alcoholic, something he had never considered before. This incident highlighted the cultural difference between Korea and the U.S., where drinking once or twice a week may be seen as problematic or indicative of a drinking problem. However, in Korea, drinking is a much more acceptable part of the culture and is not viewed in the same way as it is in other countries.

Looking back on my time living abroad, I realize that my drinking habits may have been seen as problematic. At the time, I thought that having one or two beers was just fine because I didn't feel intoxicated or like I was consuming too much alcohol. As a result, I would often ask for a beer when visiting someone's place. However, now I feel a bit embarrassed and wonder what they thought about my behavior. Sometimes, when we see the customs of other societies, we realize that our own behaviors are not necessarily natural or obvious.

I don't really enjoy drinking anymore. Especially, soju is too bitter to drink for my liking. Instead I prefer sweet coffee.
